Welcome to the Department of Psychological Sciences
Psychology is commonly defined as the science of the mind or as the science of behavior. These brief definitions do not convey, however, the richness and diversity of the psychological sciences in the 21st century. Psychologists explore a great variety of mental processes such as thinking, feeling, remembering, judging, and planning. Psychological research deals not only with the behavior of individuals but also with social interactions and with the complex patterns of behavior found in large organizations. To answer questions about the mind and behavior, psychologists study humans from birth to death, and other species ranging from invertebrates to genetically modified mammals. Moreover, psychologists not only conduct basic research; they also conduct research designed to improve people's mental health, their performance in various settings, and their quality of life.

Here, on this website, you can find information about the full range of research, teaching, and service conducted by our faculty and students.  Navigating to the web pages for our programs and for our individual faculty members will show you the vitality of our research activities.  In addition, each month we will highlight a particularly interesting and important research project.  A description of that project, with a link to the researcher's website, can be found on the right side of this page.

Visitors can also look at the broad educational offerings of our department.  Lists of both graduate and undergraduate courses are accessible.  We're particularly proud of our research based honors program and I encourage you to take a look at its webpage.

Finally, a version of the current departmental newsletter is available.  It describes with more detail news and items of interest.

We hope that you find our website informative and user friendly.  We're proud of our department and happy to have this mechanism for showing it off.
