Faculty member or graduate student

Dr. James M. Tyler

Social Area

Description of research area

We will be conducting a number of different research projects focusing on people’s concerns about others’ impression and social acceptance of them. In the broadest terms, our projects include examining the following questions:

  1. How does self-regulation intersect with self-objectification (i.e., tendency for women to view themselves through a sexually objectified social lens) to influence men and women’s perceptions and behaviors?
  2. What is the relationship between stigma and self-presentation? Specifically, how do overweight individuals use self-presentation strategies to reduce the occurrence of negative social outcomes?
  3. Does affective forecasting (predicting how you will feel in the future) influence current self-presentational behavior?

Description of undergraduate participation

Undergraduates will serve as experimenters and will help conduct experiments in the lab. They will also help prepare stimulus materials for the experiments.
