My research interests in general encompass factors that influence motivation. Recent research has focused on the impact of achievement goals on affect, cognition, and performance. We have been using the 2 x 2 structure of achievement goals which identifies them in terms of definition of competence (mastery versus performance and valence (approach versus avoidance). However, we are expanding the model to include the goal of work avoidance in which individuals wish to minimize the effort they put into work tasks. We examine both the impact of situation factors that encourage the adoption of different goals and individual differences in goal adoption. Recent work has focused on the effects of achievement goals and affect on performance of intelligence test items, taking into account the dynamic nature of motivation and affect.
