Dr. Monteith’s research concerns the social psychological study of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination, and it is broadly related to implicit social cognition, attitudes, and self-regulation. Much of her work focuses on implicit (nonconscious) intergroup biases, the conditions under which they are activated and influence overt responses, and how they can be controlled and changed. She has worked extensively with the Self-Regulation of Prejudiced Responses Model, which concerns the processes involved in de-automatizing habitual, stereotype-based reactions to members of outgroups. Her research also examines other avenues for promoting positive intergroup attitudes and relations (e.g., interpersonal confrontation, stereotype suppression, self-linking, and social norms). Another focus is on members of stereotyped groups and the psychological and behavioral implications of internalizing negative ingroup associations.
