Graduate Student Awards

 

Graduate Student Travel Award:  Criteria and Procedures

Graduate students in good standing in Psychological Sciences who are in their first 5 years of training will be eligible for up to $300 per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) to support their travel to a conference (or conferences) where they will be presenting their research.  Both primary authors and supporting authors are eligible fro the award.

To receive reimbursement of conference expenses, each student needs to provide Ruth Simpson in the business office (ruthie@purdue.edu) with:  

 1.  complete Purdue Form 17.  Form 17 must be completed prior to the conference.

 2.  evidence that his or her paper or poster was accepted for presentation at the conference (e.g., confirmation e-mail, copy of the program, etc.).

 3.  evidence of conference registration.



C. Eugene Walker Outstanding Graduate Student Award

AWARD DESCRIPTION:

The C. Eugene Walker Outstanding Graduate Student Award is an endowment provided by Dr. C. Eugene Walker who received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Purdue University in January of 1965.  Graduate students who receive this award have their names placed on the C. Eugene Walker Award plaque in the Peirce Hall lounge, receive an individual framed certificate and receive up to $800 in the form of reimbursement for the expenses (travel, lodging, food, etc.) of traveling to present one or more research papers at one or more national or regional conferences.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

To be eligible for the award, a student must be either:

    (a)  a primary author of one or more posters or papers already accepted for presentation ata  meeting (or meetings) that will be held during the remainder of the award year, or

    (b)  a primary author of one or more posters or papers presented since the last Walker Award nomination process, and for which notification of acceptance was not yet available.

REVIEW PROCESS:

The Graduate Policy Committee reviews applicants for the award, placing greatest emphasis on the applicants' accomplishments in research and scholarship.  Applications for the award should include:

  • a copy of the material submitted to the conference,

  • a copy of the notification of acceptance of the papers,

  • a current curriculum vitae,

  • a one-page (no longer) nomination statement from the student's faculty advisor.  (In particular, the nomination statement should place the research to be presented in the context of the student and/or advisor's previous work.)


APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications are submitted annually in March.  An announcement will be advertised to all graduate students each year providing a specific due date for submissions.

Graduate Research Publication Award

AWARD DESCRIPTION:

This award is to recognize excellence in graduate student research, and is awarded to two students per year.  Submitted papers must appear in a refereed journal, either published in the preceding calendar year or currently in press.  A paper may only be submitted for award consideration one time.

  • 1st Prize:  $500 (to be split among graduate student co-authors, if any, as determined by the co-authors), name(s) engraved on plaque displayed in the department, and a framed certificate.

  • 2nd Prize:  $250 (to be split among graduate student co-authors, if any, as determined by the co-authors), name(s) engraved on plaque displayed in the department, and a framed certificate.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Current graduate student in good standing in the department.

  • Student must be sole or first author of the paper.

  • If other graduate students in the department co-author the paper, each will be recognized with the award.

  • Faculty can be co-author(s) on the paper, but cannot be first author.


REVIEW PROCESS:

Papers will be evaluated by members of the Graduate Policy Committee (GPC), who represent all areas of the department.  GPC members will not participate in the evaluation of any papers submitted by their own students.  Papers will be judged on magnitude of contribution to the psychological sciences and on expository style.  Applications for the award should include:

  • The paper (if in-press, also include copies of the acceptance letter)

  • A brief statement (maximum 1 page) from the student's major professor in support of the award
