Undergraduate PreparationStudents are expected to have a broad undergraduate preparation in: - Mathematics
- Natural sciences
- Social sciences
- Humanities
Undergraduate preparation in the major areas of Psychology (including statistics and research methods) is highly desirable. A student whose background in psychology appears inadequate, but who is otherwise qualified for graduate study, may be admitted but will be required to make up deficiencies. It is desirable for a student to have some experience working in clinical or human service settings. The most competitive applicants for admission have in-depth research experience (e.g., a senior thesis or service as a lab assistant), and have strong interest in research training.
Admission to the ProgramAll students applying for admission to the Program must submit: - A completed on-line application for admission, http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/admissions/
- Two official, original transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
- At least three letters of recommendation (submitted on-line) from persons familiar with the candidate's work
- Scores on the Graduate Record Examination sent to Institution code: R1631
All applicants should list 2-3 professors with whom they would like to study. (The names and specialities of the clinical faculty also are listed in the Brochure and on the website, as described in the Research link above.) After meeting our basic criteria, applicants are selected based on the overall strength of their qualifications, and the match of their research interests with those of professors accepting students. All application material should be in the hands of the graduate admissions administrative assistant no later than December 18 of the year prior to the Fall in which the student is applying for admission. This insures the fullest possible consideration for admission and for special fellowships. We prefer applicants with a combined GRE verbal-quantitative score of 1200 or more; however, we may consider applicants with lower scores under special circumstances. For Fall 2008, 130 individuals applied to the Program. Five offers were made, and three accepted.
