Research in my lab examines behavioral, endocrine, and neural components of eating disorders and obesity.  Current research is focused on characterizing the effects of (1) specific dietary macronutrients on energy homeostasis, (2) the neuroendocrine consequences of long-term caloric restriction and (3) neuroendocrine correlates of activity-based anorexia and binge eating disorder.  Through evaluation of the neuroendocrine effects of dietary macronutrients, we aim to understand how a diet-induced shift from a glucose metabolism to a ketone metabolism affects peripheral and CNS factors involved in the control of food intake and regulation of energy balance.   In studies of the long-term effects of chronic caloric restriction, we examine how long-term calorie restriction and subsequent refeeding and weight restoration affect neuroendocrine regulation of energy balance and whether there are permanent consequences of prolonged under-nutrition.  Finally, animal models of eating disorders are employed in order to evaluate the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and meal-related endocrine effects in activity-based anorexia and binge eating disorder.
