Graduate training in social psychology at Purdue emphasizes research as a central focus for learning. Students are encouraged to become involved in research at an early point in their training by participating in faculty research projects and/or by carrying out individual research projects under the guidance of faculty. Teaching experience is also available and is considered an important aspect of graduate training.

The graduate program in social psychology is oriented toward doctoral training. However, all students must complete an M.S. degree as one of the requirements of the doctoral program. Students are expected to complete the program within 5 years. For students entering the program with a master's degree, a four-year program is suggested.

Teaching and research assistantships are available throughout one's years of training and outstanding students are automatically placed in competition for university fellowships.
